I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 2006 meeting of the Bárány Society. This is the 24th meeting since our society was founded, and the eight time we convene here in Uppsala. On this occasion the Bárány Society is holding its meeting at the Main Assembley Hall at the University. During the meeting the Robert Bárány Jubelee Medal will be awarded. The Bárány gold medal dates back to an international fund to which contributions were donated in honour of Bárány's 60th birthday, in 1936. Regrettably, however, Bárány died shortly before his birthday and it was then decided that the fund should be used to defray the costs of striking a medal in gold and bearing the likeness and name of Robert Bárány. This medal is awarded by the Medical Faculty of Uppsala University to the scientist who, during the preceding six year period is deemed to have published the most valuable work on the vestibular system in its widest sense. I welcome all of you to Uppsala and trust that together we shall succeed in promoting important contributions to our research field Matti Anniko, President |
